What is the census ?

The census, which takes place every five years, is a count of all the people and households in the country.  The next census will be on Sunday April 23, 2006.   Everyone who is in the country on that date will need to be included on a census form.  No matter where you are on Census Day - whether you're at your home in Ireland, staying with relatives or friends, in a hospital, etc - you will need to be counted.

How does it involve me ?

Every household in the country will receive a census form. Then, on Census Day - Sunday, April 23, 2006 - the householder or any adult member of the household present that night must fill it in.

Is it compulsory for me to fill in a census form ?

Yes. Because the information the census provides is so important for planning a better future for us all, you are obliged by law to fill in a census form.

And it's completely confidential ?

Absolutely.  All of the answers you provide on your census form are completely confidential. This is guaranteed by law!

So what happens next ?

Every community in Ireland, including yours, has a number of census enumerators - people employed by the Central Statistics Office to carry out the census.

Your census enumerator will make contact with you to deliver your blank census form. Please keep your form safe and complete it accurately on Census Night. Your census enumerator will call to collect your completed form as soon as possible after Census Day.

What if I have any questions ?

Your census enumerator is there to help you and will be glad to answer any questions you might have about the census or filling in the census form.

A translation of the census form is also available in the following 11 languages: Arabic, Chinese, Czech, French, Latvian, Lithuanian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian and Spanish.

So fill in your census form on April 23, 2006 and be part of the bigger picture.

Where can I get help filling in my form ?

1. You can get help from the Census Enumerator.

2. You can get help from a friend or relative.

3. If you are studying English,  you may be able to ask your English teacher for help with filling out the form.
